FORT CALGARY

We discovered Fort Calgary used to be a Northwest Mounted Police station.

We learned about the mounted police. They wore bright red uniforms.

We acted out a play that happened in the past.  Some of the characters were John Ware and Sam Livingston.  We got to wear costumes.

We ate lunch in groups of four and after we ran around outside.

We learned that Calgary had a big fire that burned down 14 buildings in the city.
Buildings made of sandstone don't burn and our City Hall was originally made of sandstone.

We learned about tipis.
We built a house - a small one.  It was made of logs and sod.

We had to cooperate and work together.

It was really fun.

When we got back to class a mysterious plant lover had given Room 13 all new plants!
WOW!  They look amazing!

Thanks to all the parents for returning forms and paying fees so we could go on this amazing trip.
A special thanks to volunteers who accompanied us.  It was a great day all around!

FIELD TRIP TOMORROW reminders

I'm looking forward to our exciting field trip to FORT CALGARY tomorrow.
Just a few quick reminders:

I've emailed all parents about missing forms.  If you have not received an email then I have your form!

Please pack an extra filling lunch and snack (for when we return in afternoon) as students often get more hungry than usual on field trips.

Ensure students have a full breakfast as we start our program as soon as we arrive and there will not be time to have a snack for the class. (For those students who have medical needs we will be making arrangements for a break in the program to ensure individual needs are met.)

Students will be packing their indoor shoes and lunches in their backpack.  Red folders and anything else in backpacks can stay at home.

Parent volunteers:  please remember your own lunch (there is no cafeteria) and bring indoor shoes if this will make you comfortable.  Museum rules are no food and drink, so coffees etc. must remain in the Learning Centre with the student lunchbags.

Please sign in to the office at 9:10 and meet outside Room 13 to connect with your ride.  We have 8 volunteers and two vehicles going.  I will give you parking information then.

Please email me if you have any concerns or questions.

See you tomorrow!

Ms. Betty

Friday is Fancy Friday!

FANCY FRIDAY

We are celebrating all the achievements that will be shared on the report cards coming out by coming to school dressed in our best!  Students can wear their fancy clothes, maybe a dress, skirt or shirt and tie normally reserved for more formal occasions!  Remember that Room 13 has gym class in the morning and clubs later on so dress appropriately so that students can participate fully in all activities.  We are looking forward to celebrating together in style!

FEES FOR OUR FABULOUS FIELD TRIP TO FORT CALGARY

Thanks for responding so swiftly and paying fees for the field trip.  We have a couple more students to look after this before all fees are covered.  Please double check if you have paid your fees soon or contact Tricia in the office if you are unsure.

Field Trip Volunteers

Thanks for responding so quickly about the field trip!

If you have emailed me to indicate your availability for the field trip, thank you!
I will be meeting on Friday with Room 11's teacher to coordinate our volunteers for this trip.

Please note,  due to limited space on the bus, we are requesting that parents drive in their own vehicles to Fort Calgary.  If you need to arrange a ride, please let me know and I will arrange a carpool for the parents going.  More details to follow as we work out the details!

Kind regards,
Ms. Betty

Field Trip Updates

This month room 13 is heading to Fort Calgary on January 20 (edited after posting - please note the change in date).

On May 5 we will be going to the Calgary Zoo.

Both field trips are full day trips - leaving at 9:10 and returning about 2:30 or so.

The cost for each trip is $17 - for a total of $34.00 for both.

Please arrange for payment using MyCBE/PowerSchool account.
The office will accept debit, cash, credit and cheques but prefers on-line payments.

We are looking for parents to accompany us on both trips.
Please email Ms. Betty if you have a valid police clearance and would like to come with us.

First post for the new decade!

Happy New Year!

Today in Room 13 we wrote about our holidays.
We created New Years Resolutions - these we are still working on - we will post some tomorrow after we are done!

In Math we reviewed our basic Math facts.
Grade 1's explored the commutative property of addition when we discovered that you can reverse the addends in a sum and the answer will be the same.  Grade 1's worked on making 10 in a variety of ways.
Grade 2's reviewed the commutative property rule from last year and found out how many different sums there are that make 18.

Grade 1's each made 11 flashcards altogether.  (Total sums that make 10)
Grade 2's each made 19 flashcards altogether.  (Total sums that make 18)

The rest of the day we worked on our new nametags for our coathooks.  Our old ones were getting very worn and we wanted to add some color!

A reminder that Wednesday is library day.  If you still have books at home, please return them for this date.
