November 26

What have we learned today?

We learned about how the bear represents courage in the seven sacred teachings. We also learned more about setting and bumping in volleyball. We practiced writing the letter E again.

What do you want to share with your parents?
In math, we used 3 big dice to add and count to 18.
We had to add up two dice and decide which number was on the missing dice hidden behind someone's back using only the sum!

TODAY's Learning

What have we learned today?

We learned about pictographs and filled in our graphs on the weather today. Grade 1’s played a memory game in math counting to 10. Grade 2’s learned about bar graphs and answered questions. We learned how to write the letter Z. We read Scaredy Squirrel and learned about acorns.

Any AHA! Moments?

Acorns create other trees.

What do you want to share with your parents?

In music, we learned a new song about leaves. Today was a fun day. Image result for scaredy squirrel at the beach

See you tonight!

Hello Families,

Tonight is our Celebration of Learning! Students and teachers are excited to share their work and learning with you. Classrooms will be open from 6:15 to 7: 45 pm. Families are encourage to visit their child's classroom any time during the allotted time frame. Please allow for at least 30 minutes to spend looking at your child's work and projects. Don't forget to check out all the bulletin board's outside of the classrooms too.

We are also encouraging families to visit the lost and found for missing items. It is also a great time to check to see if your child's indoor shoes still fit. Don't forget to check out the Scholastic book fair in room 10. All proceed go directly to our school library.

Art coming home tomorrow

We had a lot going home tonight.
I will send home the Art tomorrow after you've had a look at the TWAS  and Science Quiz tonight.
Thanks!

Crazy Hair Day and our talk about TOYS

Crazy Hair is TOMORROW!
You can make your hair as crazy as you like.
You can wear a wig or a headband or anything you like!
As long as you can still read and write and participate in class!
We would love to see your crazy side tomorrow!

And about toys...
We have had a lot toys being brought to school in backpacks.
They are a distraction and we do not want them to get broken or lost.
PLEASE do not bring TOYS to school.  This does include stuffies.
If your child needs something in their backpack for after school, please remind them to keep it out of sight and in their backpack while at school.
Parents, please go through your child's backpack as a few may have appeared in there!

Art coming home - perspective

Students have been learning how objects are perceived as small far away and larger close up in our study of PERSPECTIVE.  We have complete our work with our autumn sketch and you should see it coming home.  Please sign and return it to school as we want to put it in our creative journals.

Ask us:

Where is the horizon line?  (What is horizontal?)
What season is it?  (How do I know it's autumn in your picture?)
How did you make the road look realistic (or in perspective)
Why did you name your art _______________ ?

Book Fair Times

Room 13 will be visiting the Book Fair Tuesday and Thursday this week at 1:10 - 1:25.
If students are going to be purchasing items, please review with them the expectation is that the money they bring from home is to go towards their own purchase.  Students should not be loaning or sharing money.

The book fair will be open during our Celebration of Learning on Thursday as well.

TWAS and writing goals

(First of all, the TWAS journals will go home on Monday - please sign them and return them to school.  Thanks!)

Students in room 13 have been working hard looking at what makes up a sentence.
Grade 1s are focussing on including capitals and periods.  The last few weeks we have looked at subjects and actions to make sure our sentences make sense.

Grade 2s are taking it a step further and using their senses to add details to their writing.

We have started new writing goals this month.  We created some very fun similes about squirrels.  We decided we had a squirrel with "ears like little burnt marshmallows".  Super fun!

We will be exploring the fascinating life of the squirrel as the year goes on.
Here is our very own squirrel friend, guarding the squirrel books.

THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL ASSEMBLY!

Thanks to the students of Room 13 who worked so hard on their presentations for the assembly on Friday.  There was evidently a lot of work and practice happening at home!
Thanks also to the parents who made it out to the assembly.  It was great to see you in the audience.

One of our students returned from a visit to Houston and delighted us with a homemade video about his experiences.  He has begun our science question of the week by asking us "What are the 3 parts of the space shuttle?"

There may be a video coming next week with the answer and another question!

Please submit your answers to Ms. Betty on a slip of paper with your name on it and your answer in order to qualify for a special draw!

Wear Red and Black on Friday

We are all excitedly preparing for our assembly on Friday.
Please look around for a RED shirt if possible to wear to the assembly.
We are also requesting BLACK pants or skirts for the occasion.
You do not need to buy new clothes - please wear whatever you have at home.
These are only suggestions.

Our buddies are wearing black pants and white shirts so this would also be appropriate.
Please remember this is a solemn assembly and we would like our dress to reflect the tone of the day.

Thanks to the parents who have help their child practise their line/lines for the assembly.
It was sounding good today.  Keep it up!

If you have any questions please email.

Ms. A. Betty

November Assembly on Friday

On Friday, Room 13 is hosting the Remembrance Day assembly with our buddy class in Room 25 (as well as Room 24).  The assembly will begin at 10:45 - I suggest that if you are attending, you aim to arrive at 10:30 to get a seat.  This will be a quiet assembly with many chances to reflect on the meaning of Remembrance Day.

Grade 1's will be presenting their study on Indigenous symbols of peace and Grade2's will present on the Tree of Peace from the Iroquois Confederacy. Each student will be presenting a sentence on this subject.  I will send them home, hopefully Monday!, once they are finalized, for you to practice at home.

We will also be presenting a song that we have been practicing called "Song of Peace".

Finally, we will be reciting In Flanders Fields by John MacCrae with our buddies.

Here is a copy of the words to practice at home:

Grade 1/2's will be joining their buddies in the verses that starts with "We are the dead... " and we will be reading this together up to "and now we lie in Flanders Fields".  We will also be saying the last line:  "Though poppies grow in Flanders Fields." together.

Please practice this with your child at home.   We will be going over it in class this week on a daily basis.  Students will be reading from a card that they will take to the ceremony so no memorizing is needed once the words are learned.

Thanks for your support!  If you have any questions, please email me.

Remember to turn your clocks an hour back!  Otherwise you will be REALLY early to school tomorrow!

Ms. A. Betty
