Google Docs and Comments

If you are using the Digital Journal in google, make sure you turn on suggesting as I will be leaving comments as I read the journals.  You can find the button at the top on the right hand side - it's a cartoon speech bubble.  You can also leave your own!

It looks like this:

Google Journal and IRIS passwords

Thanks to those students who have been able to access the digital journal.  Your entries put a smile on my face and were a welcome break to my day!  :)

You should have received an email with the following information:

GOOGLE JOURNALS – Spring Break Writing

Over the Spring Break, students should be writing and reading daily and I thought that if they wanted to create a digital journal this would be a good time!  I’ve create a google doc for each student with this in mind.

I have one too!

You can upload pictures of student writing/events or students can also use speak to text to add to their document.

**If you do decide to use this digital journal, please keep in mind that other students and families from our classroom CAN view the contents.  Your child’s file is not a private one. **

(In order to have a private file I would have to change their student login password and I did not want to add to the confusion!)

Just like we trust students in the classroom to respect each other’s belongings and not write in each other’s notebooks, students need to be considerate of other students’ google documents and only alter their own. With this in mind, I’m asking that adults work with their child so that we can ensure that everyone’s Google Journal is only altered by the author.
(I have not included the login information here (on the blog) - please email me if you need it.)

IRIS passwords

It has become apparent that the CBE will be moving forward with various on-line resources that require all students to be able to access D2L and Google docs.  Therefore, each student has been assigned a new password that is compatible with the Google platform (it needs to be at least 8 characters long).

On Friday, you will each be receiving an email that contains a brief summary of your student's achievements (in lieu of interviews) as well as a list of their passwords.  The NEW CBE password for your child's IRIS account (and school computer login) will be listed there, along with RAZ Kids login information in case you needed it.

I have just assigned and tested passwords and they are working.
If your child knows their current password (or you were able to find their card from their cubby), then all you need to do is add a capital to the word and 12345 after it as their new password.  The Student ID number remains the same.  I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

Please don't worry about any of this... let me know if you can't get on IRIS and are worried.
I'm communicating this in case you were trying and wondering why you could not get on.

Kind regards,  Ms. Betty Image result for cartoon giraffe

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENT BELONGINGS

Thanks to all the families who have communicated encouraging and thoughtful comments in the last few days.  I will be getting back to you in the near future...  I miss you all and would love to hear how students are doing -

Down below you will find an email that was emailed out to all families - I'm posting it again in case anyone did not receive it.
Please read it carefully in preparation if you plan to come to the school.

I've added a list so that you may understand what materials you are bringing home and how they can be used.  In your child's bin you will find materials that will assist you in continuing their learning from home:

Things you may keep:
Raz Kids / IRIS student id and password . ** This is important to keep handy. ***
Music Reflection - fill out and complete.  Ms Nair does not need them back.
Animal Story plan - please keep this handy - students should be working on finishing them - I have not yet decided how students will share this.  More information to follow.
Indigenous Art and tally chart - students can finish these.  I will post the slide show we used in class about the art to assist in this in the near future.
Shadow Math - sorry, these beautiful objects had to folded - we did not finish them - students can decorate and measure their actual height if you wish.  This was going to be a hallway presentation for interviews...
Spiral orange gridded Math book - you may use this as you wish - most books are full by now.  There is a handy chart in the cover for the spelling of number words if you wish to work on this.

*Things to return when school resumes:
I would appreciate the following items returned if school is back in session before the end of June:

*I Love Math - these books were just started for our new Math groups in class.  You may use them for your own math exploration.

*Desk Nametag-  Please keep on hand for printing practice and encourage proper formation of letters - top to bottom.

*Playdough - we use this for word work - making letters or drawing words right into it

*White laminated journal - this is our weekly journal

*Orange laminated journal - this is where we practice spelling and word work exploration

(I may have miss somethings and some bins may have more or less than this list - most students should have these materials to the best of my knowledge.)

Collection of Student Belongings

Hello CJP families,
Please see in the schedule below the pick-up times for you to pick-up your child’s personal belongings and return library and home reading materials.
We have divided the pick-up times into several sessions to assist with social distancing. We respectfully request that only ONE parent enter the school to reduce the number of people visiting the building. We recommend that children stay home as this will likely be a difficult time for them to remain a safe distance away from peers and friends, however, this remains a parent decision as we are not allowed to restrict student access to the building for belonging pick-up.
Please bring a backpack or shopping bag as most children have many items that will need to be taken home. Please do NOT take the bin holding your child’s items.  All lost and found items will also be in the gym.
If your child has medication stored at school, please check in with the teacher who will be at a table in the hall. They will be able to provide you with your child’s medications.
If you are unable to pick-up at your scheduled time, please plan to pick-up in the additional times scheduled.
If you are only dropping off library books and home reading materials, a bin will be located at the front entrance for these items. Personal items (Inside Shoes) not picked up will remain at the school for pick-up when school resumes. School work remaining will be recycled.
Please plan to enter through the unlocked front doors and proceed directly to the gym where all belongings are located. We ask that you exit through the gym doors (south or east).
Thank you

In Math Today

Today students were learning to use a number line to count by 2s, 5s and 10s.
We accomplished some pretty creative adding!

We have been busy making our own life-sized shadows to measure our height.
Now we are comparing our predicted height with our actual height.

Here are some examples of our number line practice work.
Next week we are going to be comparing our own predicted and actual height using number lines.

Thanks!
Ms. Betty

Assignments coming home on Monday

Dear Families of Room 13

You will find two assignments coming home on Monday.
Both need the signed paper returned to me after you have gone through the assignments.

SEVEN SACRED TEACHINGS booklet

This was completed in December and then revisited in February.
Students were given the opportunity to review the expectations and enhance their work before we started our new Indigenous exploration through Art that we are currently completing
.
I have included an expectations checklists as well as an overall mark for the assignment to give you an idea of your child's achievement.  Please sign and return the checklist and send it back to me for my records.  Please keep your child's work unless I have requested it to be returned to me.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION practice

Students have been refining their adding and subtracting skills through daily practice, games and activities.  The Mad Minute/Practice pages coming home are only one kind of assessment of your child's mathematical skills.  They do, however, show where students may be having difficulties as well as what to focus on for home practice.

On each paper I have indicated a general number of achievement.  This mark is for this assignment alone and does not reflect your child's overall grade in Math.   Please use the descriptions below to help you when you go through your child's work with them.

Students working on differentiating subtraction and addition operations as well as working on using strategies accurately may be at a 1 limited understanding of concepts for this assignment.

Some students are working on using strategies accurately, but show a basic understanding for addition and subtraction strategies.  This is generally what I would expect from a student achieving a 2 basic level of understanding.

Students that show a good understanding and execution of strategies would be around a 3 level.  These students may be working on increasing their speed of calculation as well as checking for mistakes in their calculations.

Students achieving a 4 would show almost consistent accuracy and able to complete calculations efficiently in the time given.

Please go through the assignment with your child, sign and return it to me.  I have been meeting with them all in small groups so they should know what strategies they are working on.  I will be happy to discuss this further at interviews.

*** . Please note that some of the Math practice sheet were marked twice.  The first round was in pen and I determined students needed more time.  Please note the ORANGE marks as the final assessment. ***

Thanks for your support!

Math Game to try at home - COUNTING ON

Students can use the following game to reinforce and strengthen their counting on skills.
It's a great after school activity.

Supplies Needed:

Or add some movement to this fun game with a giant deck of cards and large dice!

Instructions for this Counting On card game:

Shuffle and place the cards face down on the table. Player one flips over the top card and starts a discard pile.
Next the first player will throw the dice. Their challenge is to start counting from the number shown on the card and count on the number of times shown on the dice.
Take turns flipping over a card and counting.
There is no winner or loser in this game. It’s just simply a turn-taking game.
The game is quite simple and won’t take long to learn. In the picture above, my daughter turned over a 10. She then threw a dice and got a 6. She started at 10 and counted: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.
To make it more difficult, my oldest daughter skipped the counting on and just added the number on the card to the number on the dice in her head. This is a great way to play the game with kids at different skill levels.
