BUGS IN ICE and TODAY'S sound study

Today we had a few very cold guests in our class.
The first beetle we watched as the ice shrunk over the day.  It took about 3 hours!
After recess we had a GREAT ICE RACE where we tried to melt our ice the fastest without breaking it or cutting it up.

Here are some of our discoveries:
- all of our hands melt it faster than just one of us
- putting it in paper towel protected our hands from the cold
- spinning it helped it melt faster
- rubbing it with paper towel seemed to work
- when we rub our hands together we make an energy called friction - it makes it warm
- squeezing the ice also seems melt it faster

Next steps for us are to look at how to SLOW the melting process down.
Students are coming home with this question:  How do you stay warm at home?  When you go outside?  How do things stay cold?

Today we studied the sound "SH" and learned the actions (one finger down cheek as when shaving or finger to lips as in "Shhhhh!") .  We learned what a sheriff is!
